GERDA researcher receives Systembolaget’s research award

Umeå University researcher Wossenseged Birhane Jemberie, affiliated with the GERDA network, has been awarded the 2026 Junior Prize by Systembolaget for his research on alcohol and health among older adults. The recipient is selected by an independent prize committee consisting of established researchers in Sweden. His research highlights older people’s experiences of alcohol-related problems, their needs for care and support, and how interventions can be adapted to individuals’ life situations and goals. In a recent GERDA study, based on data from nearly 12,000 people aged 65–90 in northern Sweden and western Finland, he and his colleagues show that risky alcohol consumption also occurs among the oldest age groups and is influenced by factors such as health, social life, and emotional well-being. The study emphasizes the need for preventive interventions that not only focus on health risks, but also take into account older adults’ quality of life and psychosocial circumstances. The award was presented at Systembolaget’s alcohol research conference on May 21, 2026.
