New GERDA study on loneliness among family caregivers
A newly published GERDA study based on data from Western Finland and Northern Sweden shows that being a family caregiver is a risk factor for loneliness over time. The study followed caregivers in various stages of caregiving, i.e., those who had recently become caregivers, those who had been caregivers for a longer time, and former caregivers, between the years 2016 and 2021. The results showed that, even after controlling for several well-known social and health-related risk factors for loneliness, the status of being a long-term caregiver remained a risk factor for loneliness. The study was authored by Sarah Åkerman (Åbo Akademi), Fredrica Nyqvist (Åbo Akademi), Mikael Nygård (Åbo Akademi), Fredrik Snellman (Umeå University), and Birgitta Olofsson (Umeå University) and is available here.
